Data Residency Basics for Global Teams

By Daniel Kovacs · September 10, 2026 · Compliance

Discussions around territorial data storage tend to emerge as an afterthought, often dismissed as a basic configuration toggle to store European records locally. In reality, meeting territorial constraints is an exhaustive architectural undertaking rather than a superficial server provisioning choice.

Focusing solely on where the core database engine resides creates a false sense of security. Ancillary infrastructure like database backups, search sync workers, logging warehouses, and observability pipelines routinely replicate customer records across borders unless explicitly restricted.

Successful strategies approach residency as an end-to-end request routing problem: client origins are identified at the network perimeter and routed exclusively through regional infrastructure stacks. The added operational surface area is considerable, but negligible compared to compliance violations.
